Sunset and moored boats at Kuakata beach

Kuakata Beach

An roughly 18-km-long sea beach at Kalapara in Patuakhali district, southern Bangladesh. Known as the 'Daughter of the Sea' (Sagorkanya) because both sunrise and sunset can be seen from the same spot.

Lebur Char

A natural char of about 1,000 acres lying 5 km east of Kuakata beach, covered with keora, gewa, goran, koroi and golpata trees. It works as a quieter complement to Kuakata and is easily combined with a Kuakata trip. There are no shops or accommodation on the char itself - stay in Kuakata.

Photo of Sonar Char

Sonar Char

A mangrove-fringed char risen in the Bay of Bengal under Char Montaz union of Rangabali Upazila, about 45 km from Patuakhali district headquarters. On its roughly 9 km beach, small red crabs can be seen at dawn; the Forest Department reports deer and monkeys in the forest, and winter brings migratory birds. There are no hotels on the island - visitors stay at the Forest Department camp or camp, which is a basic experience.

Lebur Bon

Despite the name, almost no lemon trees — tradition says it is named after merchant Lembu Motabber; the popular west-side point.

Kawar Char

Reach before dawn for the sunrise — Kuakata's signature sight (one of the few beaches with both sunrise and sunset over the sea).

Mini Switzerland

Golden grass in winter, green in the monsoon — the meadow changes character with the season.

Tin Nodir Mohona

Where three rivers meet — famous for sunset, with Fatrar Char visible across the water.
