Seasonal warning: The river looks best when full in the monsoon, though ferries get crowded and delayed; the river shrinks in winter.

Introduction

A historic river port on the south bank of the Padma; after the Kolkata-Goalundo railway opened in 1871 it was the main water-and-rail hub for travellers to eastern Bengal, Assam and Burma. A 1913 colonial account noted that Goalundo occupied a very strong strategic position in the waterways of Bengal. Today the draws are the wide Padma views and the busy Daulatdia-Paturia ferry operations next door.

Suggested time: 2-3 hours

How to get there

From Dhaka either go via the Padma Bridge/Mawa road towards Faridpur-Rajbari, or cross the Padma on the Aricha-Paturia ferry and continue to Goalando; then take local transport to the ghat. Check routes and ferry schedules.
